To Feed the Flock of God
Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood. (Acts 20.28)Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof, not by constraint, but willingly; not for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind; Neither as being lords over God’s heritage, but being ensamples to the flock. (1 Pet. 5.2-3)
For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ. (1 Cor. 3.11)
Yesterday, with a sense of great humility and inadequacy to the task, along with my brother John Uselding, I was ordained to the office of ruling elder, to serve my church, Liberty and Grace Reformed Church of Warrenton, Virginia. The duty of this office was well described by Pastor Rob McCurley, who along with Pastor Steven Dilday, laid hands on the two new elders. Quoting from the Second Scottish Book of Discipline (1578), he said: “As the pastors and doctors should be diligent in teaching and sowing the seed of the word, so the elders should be careful in seeking the fruit of the same in the people.” God grant (and please if you feel so inclined, pray with me, to the end) that we might indeed faithfully feed the flock of God in our little corner of Christ’s kingdom.
